OVERVIEW & SECTIONAL
SPONSORSHIP
The Botanical Society of America (BSA) will hold its annual meeting
in Austin, Texas from August 12 - 17, 2005. In addition to the BSA,
other societies participating in the BOTANY 2005 conference will
include: the American Bryological and Lichenological Society (ABLS),
the American Fern Society (AFS), and American Society of Plant Taxonomists
(ASPT). The theme for BOTANY 2005 will be Learning from Plants.
Members of the BSA are encouraged to organize symposia for presentation at
the annual meeting. Symposia are theme-based and typically include either a
half-day or a full-day program of speakers. Individual papers are 30 minutes
in length (inclusive of questions). In addition, the symposium program may
include other components, such as a separate introduction, summary, panel discussion,
etc.
Because all symposia must be approved and sponsored by a Section
of the BSA in advance of the meeting, preliminary proposals should
be submitted to the appropriate Program Chair(s) for review and action
by the Section. Different BSA Sections have different policies and
practices for handling symposia proposals. Symposium proposals should
demonstrate a high level of organization and indicate the nature
of sponsorship requested (i.e., in name only, or with financial support).
Sponsorship can be requested from more than one BSA Section, interdisciplinary/multi-sectional
symposia are strongly encouraged. Once sectional sponsorship is obtained,
the BSA Program Director will coordinate all approved symposia.
This Call for Symposia and the proposal submission process outlined
below encompass only the BSA Sections. Other societies have different
guidelines and may have different deadlines for symposia proposals.
Submission of Symposia
Proposals
(Deadline: September 16, 2004)
Proposals should include the following: 1) a title, 2) name(s)
and contact information for all organizers, 3) a brief summary of
the symposium that includes relevant background and significance,
4) a tentative list of speakers, including their professional affiliations
and presentation titles, 5) length of symposium, 6) nature of sponsorship
requested, 7) amount of financial request, and 8) a list of all BSA
Sections and other societies from which sponsorship will be requested.
Submission of symposium proposals should be conducted on-line using
the Electronic Symposium
Proposal Submission Form. Copies of the proposals will be sent
electronically to the sender, the Program Chair(s) of the BSA Section(s)
from which sponsorship is requested, and the BSA Program Director.
There are two (2) deadlines for receiving symposium proposals, as
some Sections discuss and approve symposium proposals one full year
in advance. The deadlines are as follows: July 15, 2004 (Paleobotanical
Section and Systematics Section), and September 15, 2004 (all other
Sections).
