Systematics Section / ASPT Rabeler, Richard K. [1], Prather, L. Alan [2]. 2020 Vision: Implementing a community approach to getting herbarium collections databased and online. This discussion will build on a workshop held in fall of 2004, sponsored by the Biological Research Collections Program of NSF, at which 25 herbarium personnel came together in East Lansing, MI to discuss strategies of achieving a lofty goal: databasing all of the plant specimens in US herbaria by 2020. During this discussion, some participants in the workshop, and others involved in the process, will present ideas and resources that will move us toward this objective. An overview of the progress will be provided and there will be an opportunity for community input on how to implement the strategy. A new web forum that takes the vitally successful "Herbaria" email list to new levels will also be presented. A comparison of the most popular database platforms for herbaria will be made and the criteria by which one could choose among them defined. There will also be a discussion of the formation and cultivation of regional herbarium consortia and how these consortia can play a role in the process. There will be ample time for comments and discussion on these and other issues related to databasing herbarium specimens.
