Revisiting the circumscription of Croton Section Geiseleria using ITS and trnL-F data.

In the first modern synopsis of Croton(Euphorbiaceae sensu stricto), Webster recognized 40 section using morphological criteria. More recently, Berry et al. presented a preliminary molecular phylogeny of the genus. Here we present a more thorough molecular circumscription of the Neotropical section Geiseleria using ITS and trnL-F data. Sectional monophyly is maintained only by the incorporation of members of sections Podostachys, Octolobium and Ocalia. Some of the molecular clades also reflect geographical patterning of distribution, including a Mexican clade and a widespread Neotropical clade.
