Systematics Section / ASPT Taylor, Charlotte M. [1], Gereau, Roy E. [2], Walters, Gretchen M. [2]. A Revision of the Ancistrocladaceae. Ancistrocladaceae comprises one paleotropical genus, Ancistrocladus Wall., with 16 species of lianas found in lowland to premontane, wet to seasonal forests from Africa through southeast Asia. This family is currently classified in Caryophyllales and is closely related to Dioncophyllaceae, which also comprise African lianas. Ancistrocladus is notable morphologically for its climbing sympodial habit assisted by hooks formed from modified stem apices, the epidermal pits each containing a single trichome that secretes wax, various poorly known glandular structures found on both reproductive and vegetative organs, corolla aestivation that appears to vary within a species, and the fruits with a nutlike body, often wing-like accrescent sepals, and deeply ruminate seeds. Ours is the first species-level study of the entire genus, and is based primarily on herbarium specimens; 5 species are recognized in Asia and 11 species, including 1 newly described, in Africa, with 1 new subspecies in Nigeria. These species and subspecies were delimited based on morphology, and their ranges also conform well with generally recognized biogeographic regions. No infrageneric classification is recognized. Most species are represented by relatively few specimens, and the genus remains poorly known and in need of further study. Log in to add this item to your schedule
