The Cross Timbers: Botany, History, and Current Issues Lipscomb, Barney L. [1]. Early Explorations of the Cross Timbers by Naturalists. Botanical exploration of Texas essential began in the early 1800s and is a story of great adventures, of extraordinary discoveries, and of brave and heroic men and women. My purpose is to review the past 200 years of botanical exploration in Texas with an emphasis on 19th century naturalists who collected and documented the magnificent Texas botanical heritage of the Cross Timbers. During the golden age of exploration from 1820--1899, about 600 taxa new to science were described from Texas' collections made by early naturalists; some of these new taxa came from the Cross Timbers region. But, the end of the American frontier did not signal the end of botanical discovery. Rather, it was just the beginning for new generations of 20th century Texas taxonomists and other botanical explorers. In the end we will look to the 21st century and identify general areas of Texas in need of further exploration, either because of poor collecting coverage or because remaining areas of natural habitat are in imminent danger of disappearing.
