The Cross Timbers: Botany, History, and Current Issues Diggs, George M. [1]. Origin and Presettlement Conditions of the Cross Timbers. The Cross Timbers, like most modern vegetation types in Texas, are relatively recent (post-Ice Age) in origin. The development of the modern vegetation pattern will be discussed and examples of past and present plant distributions will be given that emphasize major changes in vegetation over time. The Cross Timbers were quite obvious to early explorers because they were areas of woodland surrounded on both sides by grasslands. Explanations for the occurrence of such distinct alternating bands of woodland (e.g., Cross Timbers) and grassland (e.g., Blackland Prairie) in the ecotone between the eastern deciduous forest and the central North American grassland will be discussed. In addition, a description of conditions in the Cross Timbers at the time of European settlement (approximately 1800 A.D.) will be given based on early explorer and settler accounts.
