Economic Botany Section Lubinsky, Pesach [1]. Genetic diversity of cultivated vanilla, Vanilla planifolia G. Jackson in Andrews [Orchidaceae]. The source of more than 90% of natural vanilla is the cured fruit of Vanilla planifolia, a rare, hemi-epiphytic orchid native to the humid, lowland forests of southern Mexico and Central America. By the early 19th century, vanilla had been introduced to Europe's colonies in the Indian Ocean, the capital of vanilla production today (Madagascar and Indonesia account for 95% of world supply). A recent RAPD survey of cultivated vanilla in Reunion has supported the hypothesis that the entire stock of cultivated vanilla, outside of Mexico, consists of a single, sexually-produced clone. In this study, we sampled 110 cultivated and wild individuals of vanilla and conducted AFLP analysis in order to assess levels of diversity and relatedness within and between cultivars and wild relatives. The geographic and evolutionary origins of cultivated vanilla will be discussed. Log in to add this item to your schedule
