Bryological and Lichenological Section/ABLS Forrest, Laura L. [1], Crandall-Stotler, Barbara J. [1], Long, David G. [2]. Multiple phylogenetic analyses of data from multiple loci support placement of Haplomitrium Nees and Treubia K.I. Goebel as the earliest diverging lineage in liverwort phylogeny. Nucleotide sequence data from eight nuclear, chloroplast and mitochondrial loci were obtained from 26 liverworts (plus nine other plant genera) in order to resolve major clades in the phylum Marchantiophyta. Maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood and homogeneous and heterogeneous Bayesian analyses were conducted, and the resulting phylogenetic hypotheses compared. Most of the ingroup relationships are consistent among analyses; however, clade support measures vary slightly. The results suggest that 1) the Marchantiophyta are monophyletic, 2) Haplomitrium and Treubiaceae Verd. form a monophyletic group sister to all other extant liverworts, 3) Blasia L. and the complex thalloids form a monophyletic group that is sister to all remaining leafy and simple thalloid taxa, 4) the Metzgeriineae R.M. Schust. ex Schljakov nest within a leafy liverwort clade, as sister to Pleurozia Dumort., and 5) the Pallaviciniineae R.M. Schust. emend. Stotler & Stotl.-Crand. and Fossombroniales Schljakov emend. Stotler & Stotl.-Crand. form a monophyletic group. These data reinforce previous parsimony-based results as to the relationships among the major liverwort lineages.
