Systematics Section / ASPT Bell, Charles [1], Washington, Amber [1]. Phylogenetic Placement and Biogeography of the North American Species of Valerianella (Valerianaceae: Dipsacales) based on chloroplast and nuclear DNA. The phylogeny of Valerianaceae and Dipsacales has seen considerably attention over the past decade with many of the major clades being strongly supported by different data sets, as well as different estimation procedures. Although Valerianaceae is a relatively small group of angiosperms (ca. 300 species), sample sizes of previous studies have been limited and were usually geographically biased. One group that has never been included in any analyses to date is the North American representatives of Valerianella. In this study we sampled 20 additional taxa from Valerianaceae, including all 9 described North American Valerianella species. Phylogenies based on parsimony and maximum likelihood methods show strong support for placing the North American Valerianella species in a clade with European Valerianella and Fedia. Beogeographic scenarios will be discussed in light of divergence dates estimate from the molecular data using recently proposed Bayesian "relaxed" clock methods.
