Developmental and Structural Section Cagiwa, Justin [1], Timms, David [1], Hunter, Kimberly [2], Hunter, Richard [1]. Improving Germination and Establishment of Larrea tridentata (Zygophyllacae). Larrea tridentata is dominant in the warm deserts of North America, and has three different ploidy levels (diploid, tetraploid, and hexaploid). L. tridentata has been documented to have a low germination rate. Seeds from California (hexaploid) were used to test the effects of light on seed germination, the effectiveness of Pink Pigment Facultative Methyltroph (PPFM) bacteria, and the efficiency of the agar used for germination. Five treatments, using different colored filters, were done to determine the effects of light on seed germination. The effect of PPFM on seed germination was determined using five treatments, including no treatment and introduction of bacteria to sterilized seeds. The seeds were planted in an agar gel solution in a Petri dish containing Hoagland's solution and allowed to germinate in a controlled growth chamber. The seeds were observed daily for germination. Results were varied. Seeds grown under dark, red, and far red filter treatments had higher germination rates than those grown under full light treatment. Seeds grown in the agar solution had a significantly higher germination rate than those germinated in soil. Trends have shown that seeds germinated with PPFM treatments have a significantly higher germination rate than those without PPFM treatments. Log in to add this item to your schedule
