Developmental and Structural Section Saenz, Braulio A. [1], Lee, David [2]. Anatomical Constraints on Chloroplast Movements in Leaves of Tropical Plants. Chloroplast movements are well documented among photosynthetic eukaryotes, but rather poorly studied among seed plants. We have examined the degree of chloroplast movement in a sample of leaves from 20 tropical plants, in relationship to their leaf anatomy. We show that the degree of chloroplast movement (as monitored by shifts in leaf light transmittance) is strongly correlated with palisade parenchyma cell width. Additional experiments on leaves of Scindapsus aureus (Araceae), plants grown in different degrees of shade, also revealed that the degree of chloroplast movement was strongly correlated with palisade cell width. These results suggest that chlorophyll movements in leaves, likely to be photoprotective, are constrained by their anatomy. Log in to add this item to your schedule
