Systematics Section / ASPT Jones, Timothy M. [1]. An interactive key to the Carex of North America. Multi-entry keys or interactive keys hold much promise as emergent tools a botanist or other taxonomists can use for the identification of difficult groups. With the publication of the Flora of North America volumes, the possibilities for botanical interactive keys now seem limitless. Future questions to be asked and answered are whether keys should be regional or on a larger scale, such as continental or even global? Should characters reflect those that are published or can new characters aid in the identification of the species level? An interactive key to the genus Carex is presented. This genus is represented in North America north of Mexico by 636 species. The interactive key has been created by synthesizing published information and combining it with original observations. The addition of multiple images and line drawings for each species, taken from multiple sources, greatly increases the effectiveness of the key. Such an interactive key to the Carices of North America may enable those unfamiliar with the genus to identify its members more confidently. Registrants are invited to participate in a test of its effectiveness.
