Systematics Section / ASPT Schnabel, Andrew [1], Kubalanza, Kari [1]. Phylogenetic analyses of Gleditsia and Gymnocladus (Leguminosae: Caesalpinioideae) using nuclear ribosomal and chloroplast gene sequences. Gleditsia and Gymnocladus are woody genera with largely temperate distributions and closely parallel East Asian-Eastern North American disjunctions. They have long been considered to form a closely related clade within the caesalpinioid alliance, but recent morphological and chloroplast DNA data suggest that Gleditsia is sister to Umtiza from South Africa rather than to Gymnocladus. We are currently testing this unexpected result using additional molecular data. At the same time, we are continuing to refine the phylogeny of Gleditsia by adding previously unsampled species and extra accessions of poorly sampled species. Here, we report on the placement of Gleditsia assamica, an extremely rare species from northern India. Previous studies indicated that G. assamica could belong to any of the three main clades within the genus. Parsimony analyses of partial sequences from the ndhF and rpl16 chloroplast genes and from the internal transcribed spacers (ITS) of the nuclear ribosomal gene cluster suggest that G. assamica has G. sinensis (China) and G. rolfei (Taiwan, Philippines) as its closest relatives, but the exact relationships among the three species remain unresolved.
