Reaching Out beyond the Ivory Towers Gerber, D. Timothy [1]. Working with K-12 School Districts - Plants in the Science Curriculum. The need for teacher professional development programs is critical for excellence in K-12 level math and science courses and is an important part of the educational reform in science occurring in the United States today. The long-term success of teacher professional development programs however is dependant on working with not just teachers but the school district as a whole. This informational session will focus on the process taken by the author to develop lasting connections with a school district and ultimately change the elementary science curriculum of this district to include more plant biology in the district-wide curriculum. The focus of this session involves work with the K-8 level however the strategy developed can be used with any grade level. The author continues to work with the school district and has jointly published plant-related papers in the National Science Teachers Association's elementary level "Science & Children" journal.
