Systematics Section / ASPT Rosen, David [1]. Taxonomic Differentiation of Eleocharis spiralis and Eleocharis mutata (Cyperaceae). Eleocharis spiralis and Eleocharis mutata have been recognized as distinct species or combined under E. mutata but never subjected to critical morphometric study. A total of 90 specimens of the two species were critically examined, and label data from them were used to prepare distribution maps. Forty-five mature specimens of each species originating from throughout their known geographical ranges were selected and measured for ten morphological characters. Principal components analysis (PCA) of morphological characters and mapping of geographical distribution were performed in order to better understand the taxonomic relationship of these two taxa. The results of the PCA show that E. spiralis and E. mutata are readily distinguished by quantitative characters of the achene and tubercle and qualitative characters of achene sculpturing, cell shape, and perianth bristle texture. Distribution maps revealed that the taxa are allopatric and that previous reports of E. spiralis in the New World were based on misidentified specimens of E. mutata.
