Morphological evidence for an unrecognized species of Thaspium (Apiaceae), and phylogenetic relationships within Thaspium inferred from nuclear Adh sequences. The genus Thaspium (Apiaceae) is generally considered to include three species: Thaspium barbinode, T. pinnatifidum, and T. trifoliatum. Thaspium barbinode and T. trifoliatum are both widespread throughout eastern North America, while T. pinnatifidum is restricted to limestone areas of the southern Appalachians. While conducting field and herbarium work we discovered a taxon that does not fit the circumscription of any of the three currently recognized species of Thaspium. Examination of the literature indicates that this taxon may correspond to Thaspium chapmanii, a name that has been long been relegated to synonymy with T. barbinode. Morphological characters that distinguish T. chapmanii from the remaining species will be described. To assess phylogenetic relationships within Thaspium we sequenced and analyzed a portion of a nuclear-encoded alcohol dehydrogenase (Adh) gene from multiple populations of all Thaspium species.
