Pteridological Section/AFS Alarid, Khalid M [1], Bray, Rebecca D [1], Musselman, Lytton John [1]. Morphology, Ultrastructure and Typology of Orbicules in Isoetes, (Isoetaceae, Lycophyta). Orbicules or Ubisch bodies are minute granules of sporopollenin observed on the innermost tangential and/ or radial walls of secretory tapetum cells. Although studied in angiosperms, orbicules have not been reported from pteridophytes. Orbicules were studied with scanning and transmission electron microscope in 6 species of Isoetes. The orbicule types are described based on morphological and ultrastructural variation. The size, shape, surface, location, distribution and density of orbicules were investigated. Orbicule characteristics may prove to be of systematic value for the genus Isoetes. Log in to add this item to your schedule
