Patterns and Mechanisms of Evolution of Island Plants Helenurm, Kaius [1]. Patterns and mechanisms of evolution of island plants. Island systems have long been appreciated for the study of evolution because they provide an opportunity to study phenomena such as adaptive radiation in a relatively recent context. The advent of a wide variety of genetic markers and new analytical techniques, combined with the diversity of taxa and island systems that have been studied recently, have provided us with new perspectives. Moreover, a number of researchers have begun to study the genetic basis of differentiation using insular endemic plants. These approaches range from quantitative genetics experiments to QTL mapping and the molecular mechanisms of phenotypic evolution. This symposium will feature talks of patterns of dispersal and evolution on island archipelagos based on molecular phylogenies and population genetic inferences, and talks on the mechanisms of evolution based on genetic and molecular data. The symposium will conclude with a discussion of our current state of knowledge and future research directions. Log in to add this item to your schedule
