Systematics Section / ASPT Schwarzbach, Andrea E. [1], Adams, Robert P. [2], Morris, Julie A. [1]. Northern hemisphere biogeography of Juniperus (Cupressaceae). The genus Juniperus comprises approximately 67 species and 28 varieties distributed in the northern hemisphere. However, one species, J. procera, grows along the rift mountains in East Africa. Phylogenetic relationships and biogeography of the genus Juniperus were studied using sequences of two DNA regions, trnC-D and ITS. A total of 97 taxa were analyzed using the genus Cupressus as outgroups. Maximum parsimony and Bayesian analyses identified six clearly distinguished clades that largely corresponded to previously recognized intrageneric groups. Those groups are distinguished by the shape of the leaf margin, serrated or smooth, as well as the number of seeds per cone and whether stomatal bands are absent or present.
Distribution information was plotted onto the molecular tree. The results suggest an Old World origin and at least three migration events into North America from the Old World at different times during the history of the genus.
