Developmental and Structural Section Preston, Jill C. [1], Kellogg, Elizabeth [1]. Complex Patterns of APETALA1/FRUITFULL Gene Expression in the Grass Family (Poaceae). In plants many of the genes involved in development are members of a large multigene family that encode transcription factors, the MADS-box gene family. Although MADS-box genes have been found to function in a wide variety of developmental stages, they are best characterized for their role in inflorescence and floral development. Phylogenetic analyses of plant MADS-box genes have distinguished particular clades whose different evolutionary histories have shaped the diversification of the angiosperm flower. One example is the APETALA1/FRUITFULL (AP1/FUL) clade, whose diversification has been implicated in the evolution of the core eudicot perianth. Although much is known about the functional roles of these genes within the core eudicots, limited work has been done to determine their involvement in floral diversification within the basal eudicots and monocots. We previously reported a duplication of AP1/FUL genes at the base of the monocot family Poaceae, which represents an important first step in determining the potential role of these genes in flowering time, and evolution and/or diversification of the grass spikelet. Here we report expression analyses of AP1/FUL genes in two temperate cereal grasses and briefly discuss the significance of these results in terms of major changes in grass inflorescence and floral morphology.
