Pteridological Section/AFS Nester-Hudson, Joan [1]. Chemical analysis of gibberellin-like compounds from gametophyte culture media extract of Anemia mexicana. Gametophytes of the fern Anemia mexicana produce antheridiogens which cause premature formation of antheridia in gametophytes and spore germination in darkness in this fern. Three gibberellins, GA45, GA61 and GA104, have been isolated from A. mexicana gametophyte culture media extract and have antheridiogen activity. Two unknown GA-like compounds have been detected by mass spectrometry from gametophyte culture media extracts. This study involves the chemical characterization of these two compounds. Acidified aqueous gametophyte culture media was extracted with ethyl acetate and fractioned using preparative chromatography and high performance liquid chromatography. Samples were methylated with diazomethane and analyzed with combined gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The mass spectra of the unknown compounds suggest they may be isomers, which can be separated with gas chromatography. The M+ of 362 with loss of M-18, M-32 and M-58 indicates they are dihydroxy compounds with ring saturation. Log in to add this item to your schedule
