[10], Skinner, Peggy [9], Sundberg, Marshall D [11], Uno, Gordon [12]. BSA Sci-Pi: 1. Learning from the online Scientific Inquiry through Plants: "The Wonder of Seeds" pilot. BSA Sci-Pi : "Scientific Inquiry through Plants" continues to evolve into an effective support tool aligned to the BSA's mission as it pertains to education, outreach and public awareness of science. There are three basic concepts behind the project. First is scientific inquiry and the wonders of "doing" real science. Second is peer-to-peer problem solving, and the third is mentorship. In March 2005 the project steering committee met at the BSA offices in St. Louis to design and implement a "proof of concept" pilot. This discussion sets the stage for three related sessions to focus on further developments to the online Scientific Inquiry through Plants "Sci-Pi Project" based on results of the "The Wonder of Seeds" pilot project. The session will begin with a brief overview of the project goals and pilot format. We then present the outcome of participation by approximately 150 students at middle schools, high schools and universities across the US. Pre-pilot surveys provided an indication of students' baseline knowledge and interest in plants. And post-pilot surveys provided and assessment of the impact of their hands-on experiments with plant growth, with input from the scientist mentors, on their knowledge base. Feedback from the project stakeholders' the students, the teachers, and the scientists' will also be presented. We encourage discussion from the broader community on the pilot as a model for bringing inquiry-based plant science into the classroom and linking students with plant scientists.
