Conference Wide Barkworth, Mary [1], Lim, Seung Jin [2]. Bridging the Internet divide. When North Americans discuss sharing floristic information, the conversation quickly turns how to discussion of what might, perhaps with a bit more work, be made available via the Internet. The discussion then often turns to high technology approaches to making information from print volumes available over the Internet. These discussions tend to overlook that many taxonomists do not have inexpensive, fast, and reliable Internet service. It is important that we consider how we can best share with such individuals important resources and how we can enable them to participate in developing digital resources for the world. The approach that we are taking is to redesign the Web site designed to share information developed in the course of preparing the Manual of Grasses for North America so that it can be downloaded to compact disk and installed on a stand-alone computer. The redesign will also permit expansion to other parts of the world, accommodation of differing treatments, and incorporation of a searchable bibliography in addition to the existing components. In order to encourage participation by others, particularly those in poorly connected parts of the world, we shall provide forms for sending back resources for inclusion on the main site, either by FTP or disk. A preliminary early version of the Web site will be demonstrated.
