Reaching Out beyond the Ivory Towers

School-University Partnership Models for Promoting Plant Biology and Inquiry.

What are some ways that we can use teacher education programs and in-service professional development activities to promote the use of plants in the curriculum? Can plant topics provide a “safe niche” for experimenting with inquiry in the classroom? This breakout session invites scientists and educators to come together to share their experiences and ideas on school-university partnerships that have potential for modeling the study of plants in the K-16 curriculum. We will examine the benefits of and barriers to these approaches, as well as the role science education standards and assessments play in shaping our thinking about curriculum. If you have inserted new (and not necessarily plant-related) content or teaching strategies into teacher education and/or teacher professional development programs or are thinking about doing so, come join us in exploring the possibilities for curriculum enhancement.
