Supporting Effective Teaching and Learning Harrison, Patricia [1]. Supporting Outdoor Teaching and Learning for K-12 Classrooms. To promote an appreciation of plants and prepare life-long learners capable of making sound environmental choices, we must capture the interests of children at an early age. With so many lacking meaningful experiences in the outdoors, schools are accepting the challenge of creating learning environments that connect children to nature and establish a sense of place. K-12 schools report success with students of different backgrounds and abilities working together in a multi-sensory, interdisciplinary approach to problem solving and learning. But for schools, the task of planning, fund-raising, constructing and maintaining outdoor classrooms is daunting. This informational session offers standards-based curriculum connections for outdoor classrooms. It also describes a collaborative model of school districts partnering with botanical organizations, businesses, city and county resources, and a charitable fund to provide a comprehensive support system throughout the life of the project, from conception to utilization as a learning environment. The ACORNS Partnership (Alliance to Connect Organizations and Resources to Nurture Students) was founded to create and sustain natural learning environments that foster ecological awareness and conservation, support outstanding teaching and school leadership, focus on family involvement and school as the center of community, and integrate curricula that connect learning with the natural world.
