The long growing season of southeast Texas and southwest Louisiana allows the production of a ratoon (a second or regrowth) rice (Oryza sativa L.) crop. The ratoon crop productivity is limited by inconsistent stand, due to environmental stresses, so producers desire to increase the consistency of rice tiller number and panicles in their fields at low costs. A key enzyme in providing photosynthate to developing tissues is invertase (E.C. 3.2.1.26), the activity of which can be inhibited by several environmental stresses, such as drought and heat. The temporary alteration of invertase activity during the sensitive period of ratoon tiller initiation and early growth could dampen stress effects on ratoon tiller establishment and crop stand. The objective of this study is to determine if manipulation of invertase by exogenous chemical application during ratoon tiller bud initiation has an effect on tiller numbers, panicle numbers, and carbohydrate levels in the crown portion of the main crop of rice. This is a field study and greenhouse study with application of thidiazuron, a cytokinin stimulant of invertase; ammonium molybdate, a chemical inhibitor of invertase activity; and concavalin A, a chemical stimulant of invertase. Invertase activity and carbohydrate composition were determined using enzyme-coupled reactions leading to stoichiometric production of NADH measured at 340nm. The results of this study are presented.
