Sexual sterility and apomixis in eastern North American Celtis.

Species in the genus Celtis (sugarberries, hackberries) are fast growing, drought resistant trees and shrubs with an almost worldwide distribution. Most populations of Celtis are sexual and outcrossing, but some populations in the eastern United States show strong chromosomal sterility, with low levels of chromosome pairing and high levels of aborted pollen in the flowers. These populations show high levels of seed set, but AFLP markers show very little within-population variation, suggesting that the seeds form primarily by apomixis. Preliminary ITS data shows two unrelated clusters of ITS genes in these plants, suggesting that they may be of hybrid origin.
