A comparative study on outdoor and indoor aeroallergens of Texas Panhandle. Allergic reactions affect millions each year. To aid in the diagnosis and treatment of individuals suffering from serious allergic and asthmatic reactions in the Texas Panhandle we compared the composition of aeroallergens from the samples collected from indoor of 30 schools using double sticky tape mounted on slides and from outdoor using Melinex tapes placed on the drum of a Burkard spore trap. The tapes were analyzed after staining with 2% safranin mixed with Gelvatol. Samples were examined, counted and photographed using a BX-40 Olympus microscope attached to an Olympus Microfire digital camera. We tried to find possible correlation between the pollen and spore indices with the meteorological conditions and clinical cases established at Allergy A.R.T.S. Clinic of Amarillo, Texas. The most significant pollen recorded from out door air were Ambrosia artemisiifolia (Short Ragweed), Helianthus hirsutus (Hairy Sunflower), Solanum rostratum (Buffalo Bur), Chenopodium album (Lamb's Quarters) and fungal spores of Alternaria sp., Stachybotrys sp., Drechslera sp., Curvularia sp., Cladosporium sp. and different types of Ascospores. The indoor spora mainly composed of Alternaria sp., Stachybotrys sp., Curvularia sp., Cladosporium sp. with rarely presence of few pollen. We found significant correlation of aeroallergen levels with meteorological data and reported cases of rhinosinusitis. Log in to add this item to your schedule
