Caracterizacion arquitectonica, molecular, y cromosomica de Croton seccion Eluteria (Euphorbiaceae). Architectural, molecular, and chromosomal characterization of Croton section Eluteria (Euphorbiaceae).

With the results obtained to date from morphological, molecular, and geographical characters we can confirm that Croton section Eluteria Griseb. is a monophyletic group.  The sister group of the section consists of C. brittonianus, C. myricifolius, and C. bispinosus, three species endemic to Cuba.  Sect. Eluteria has pseudoaxillary terminal inflorescences, distinguishing it from most species of Croton which primarily have terminal inflorescences.  The chromosome number of sect. Eluteria, 2n = 20, coincides with a majority of Croton species.  Some of the previously reported synonymies were confirmed.  However, it is still necessary to determine if C. guatemalensis Lotsy is a synonym of C. reflexifolius Kunth and if C. schiedeanus Schtdl. is a synonym of C. nitens (L.) Sw.
