determination of the nature of dormancy in bauhinia rufescens  seeds.

bauhinia rufescens [family ceasalpiniacea] ,is an economic, ornamental and medicinal plant with fruits  edible to humans and animal.thecrude bark is used to treat dysentry smallpox and diarhoea in nigeria.the mature seeds of the plant were investigated  to determine the nature of the domancy.acid  scarification of seed cot, mechanical means . wet heat [parboiling] alternating temperatures, light treament ,weathering.and treatmaet with organic solvents were the various estaglished techniques used.the most effetive method was acid scarification using suphuric acidfor 25,120 & 240 minutes.this gave 100% germination at day 2 at  30 degree centigradeout of the different  mechanical methods scarification methoda used abrasion with emery cloth[sandpaper] stimulated highest % of germinationof 97%; followed by nail scissors 93%;razor blade57%;needle application0% after day 222222 of incubation at 30 degree centigrade.the following methods were not effective:wet heat; immersion in alcohol, dry and wet  storagethe rate of water uptake correlated with % germination.the main cause of dormancy was found tobe impermiable seed coat
