Vitality of xylem parenchyma during heartwood formation.

Three vital dyes namely Neutral Red (NR), Brilliant Cresyl Blue (BCB) and Phenosafranine were used in studying the vitality of xylem ray parenchyma cells in 3 heartwood producing trees and one sapwood tree. The capacity of the cells to take up and accumulate the stains decreases from sapwood to transition zone in heartwood trees, while the ray parenchyma cells of the entire secondary xylem showed accumulation of the stains. Phenosafranine, a dye used for staining the dead cells, showed metachromatic property by staining the living parenchyma cells yellow. This property of phenosafranine is reported de novo.
