A re-evaluation of the Brazoria/Warnokia (Lamiaceae) complex.

Recently, the species Brazoria scutellarioides Engelm. & A. Gray was treated in a monotypic genus: Warnockia. The proposal was based on a phylogenetic analysis that showed Brazoria as polyphyletic. Several of the characters used in the phylogeny, however, were uninformative, this due to the inclusion of a high number of autapomorphies. The objective of our study was to re-analyze the phylogeny presented by including both additional taxa and new characters. New taxa include additional species of Physostegia and new characters include chromosome counts and Scanning Electron Micrographs of seed surface structuring. Our results indicate that Brazoria scutellarioides is basal to a clade consisting of the other species of Brazoria and thus indicating that Brazoria is not polyphyletic.
